That is those of us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
